The earthworks of Barbury 'Castle' which cover an area of four acres were an Iron Age hill fort on the Ridgeway which commanded the head of the valley of the river Og. The valley provided one of the main approaches into Wessex from the north.
Liddington Castle, another hill fort on the Ridgeway can be seen to the north-east, on the opposite side of the river valley.
The fortifications consist of double ramparts, a ditch and two entarnces at the east and western ends. Excavations of the site have revelaed evidence which suggests it has been continuously occupied through the Roman occupation of Britain into Saxon times.
The Battle of Beranburgh took place at Barbury Cast in 556 as the Saxons from the Upper Thames Valley pushed their way south into Wiltshire conquering the Romano-British and laying the foundations of the kingdom of Wessex.
Barbury Castle and country park around it are managed by Swindon Borough Council. The site is provided with ample parking and toilets and refreshments often available at the wardens' bungalow.
