The site at Windmill Hill was occupied by people of the Neolithic (New Stone Age) period some 5,500 years ago who appear to have used it as a seasonal setlement.
The remains of three banks and ditches which surrounded the site can still be seen, as can several barrows.
The Neolithic site was excavated in the 1920's yielding objects and information which indicate that the site was one of the earliest Neolithic settlements in England. The objects which were recovered are diplayed at the Alexander Keiller Museum in Avebury.
Information about this and other prehistoric monuments in the area may be obtained by visiting the Alexander Keiller Museum at nearby Avebury which the hilltop site overlooks.
The bones interred in the West Kennet Long Barrow (about two miles distant) were brought to Windmill Hill for ceremonial occassions.

Avebury World Heritage Site covers 22 square kilometres of Wiltshire and includes 345 archaeological sites, 68 Scheduled Ancient Monuments and five Guardianship sites and is believed to have had some kind of religious significance to the prehistoric residents of the area.
