Calne has a shopping centre, Library and two leisure centres.
John Bentley School
The school was founded in 1663.
St Mary's and St Margaret's Independent Schools
The town was established by the Saxons of Wessex during the Dark Ages in an area with world-reknowned ancient associations such as the ceremonial site with its stone circle at Avebury, Windmill Hill, Silbury Hill, West Kennet Long Barrow and many hill 'forts'.
Although the name of the town is thought to derive from the Celtic 'col-uan', 'meeting of waters' - a reference to the confluence in the town's center of the River Marden and the Abberd Brook, the etymology remains obscure and no evidence of Celtic occupation has been found on the site. Its origin as the Celtic 'ceilog cock', 'roaring river' or the Latin 'calare', 'to call', have also been suggested.
The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records a meeting of the 'witangamot', the council of the nobles of the realm which advised the king and, on his death, elected his sucessor, held in 978 at Calne.
The meeting might have passed without mention in the Chronicle save for the fact that the floor of the upper storey where the Witam met caved in to leave only the archbishop Dunstan balanced on a beam. Some were badly injured, others died of their wounds.
William the Conqueror Domesday survey of 1086 records the name of the town as 'Cauna';-
"The King holds CAUNA. King Edward held it. It never paid tax, so it is not known how many hides are there. Land for 29 ploughs. In lordship 8 ploughs; 8 slaves. 37 villagers, 78 smallholders and 10 freedmen who have 21 ploughs. 45 burgesses. 7 mills which pay 4 12s 6d; meadow, 50 acres; pasture 2 leagues long and 1 league wide."
"This village pays one night's revenue, with all customary dues. Nigel holds the church of this manor from the King, with 6 hides of land. Land for 5 ploughs. In lordship 2; 6 slaves. 7 villagers, 2 smallholders and 11 Cottagers with 3 ploughs. 2 mills at 20s; 25 burgesses who pay 20s. Woodland 2 furlongs long and 2 furlongs wide. Total value 8."
"Alfred of Spain holds 5 hides of land which Nigel claims. This land belonged to the church before 1066, by the witness of the Shire."

By the 12th century, Calne had grown into a propersous town on the wool reared on the surrounding Wiltshire Downs. The large parish church, dedicated to St Mary, remains as testament to this medieval prosperity, as do the fine houses of the clothiers and the remains of the woollen around The Green.

Like many market towns around England, for much of its long history, Calne has served as a market centre for the surrounding countryside.
A branch of the Wiltshire and Berkshire Canal reached Calne in 1802 bringing cheap and reliable transport to the town. The canal fell into disuse by about the turn of the 20th century but the old wharf on the edge of the town remains and part of the canal has been recently cleaned out to create an attractive feature.
As the clothing industry dwindled away it could have taken the town into decline had it not been a drover's route for Irish pigs driven to the London market. The Hariss's, local farmers, devised anew way of curing bacon and established a factory processing the ready supply of porkers. The Harris factory became the largest employer in Calne until its closeure in 1983.
The decline of the clothing industry on which calne was so relaint in the 19th century caused
the town to fall on hard times but it was saved by the Harris's, local farmers who took adavntage
of the Irish pigs that were driven through the Calne to the London market. They developed a
new method of curing bacon and the business grew very successful making Harris's the largest
employer and benfactor of the town providing many facilites.
The success of the Harris's factory helped the success of other local industries
such as the Maundrell foundry which specialised in agricultural machinery and
processing equipment for all of the Harris's factories.
Oak shavings were transported by canal from the boat builders Robbins, Lane and Pinnegar (est. 1812) at Honeystreet Wharf on the Kennet and Avon Canal for smoking bacon. Robbins, Lane and Pinnegar closed in the 1940s.
The Harris factory closed in 1983 causing a huge vaccume not only in Calne's employment, but also by the withdrawal of the many social and recreational facilites provided by the company.
Walter Goodall George Walter Goodall George The Calne athlete set a world record for running the mile of four minutes and twelve seconds in 1886. George's record stood unbeaten for a remarkeable 29 years and a memmorial to mark the centenary of the event
was unveiled by Sydney Wooderson (the next British runner to break the mile world record - 1935) in 1986.
The Calne athlete set a world record for running the mile of four minutes and twelve seconds in 1886. George's record stood unbeaten for a remarkeable 29 years and a memmorial to him stands in the town.
Ingen Housz (17301799) The Dutch physician conducted research into photosynthesis, the process which converts sunlight into sugars and powers almost all of life on the planet, at nearby Bowood House.
Joseph Priestly (1733-1804) The American/English scientist who discovered oxygen conducted some of his experiments in Doctor's Pond near the centre of Calne.
John Pym A major figure in the events culminating in the Civil War (1640-1645), John Pym was one-time MP for Calne.
St Edmund St Edmund was rector of Calne when he was declared Archbishop of Canterbury.
