BROAD BLUNSDON
A Roman station existed at Cold Harbour and the foundations of a Roman farmhouse were excavated between Oxleaze and Lower Burytown Farms (map from Multimap) on October 24th, 1934 by AD Passmore, its location having been originally indicated by two large circles on an aerial photograph.
CRICKLADE
The Romans diverted Ermine Street to the town, taking advantage of a fording point. A large quantity of Roman coins has been found in a field near to where the road crossed the river.
DOWNTON
A Roman villa has been discovered at Downton but, apart from small isolated houses, southern Wiltshire seems to have been predominantly an area of native villages.
ERMINE STREET
HIGHWORTH
The town was founded on the hilltop site, previously occupied by the Britons, as a military observation post overlooking the Thames valley to the north and north-west and burials from the mid-4th century have been discovered there as well as shards of Romano-British pottery.
MILDENHALL
The larger Roman villas are found along the line of the London to Bath road which passed through Cunetio (modern Mildenhall, a mile to the east of Marlborough) and Verlucio (modern Sandy Lane).
OLD SARUM nr. Salisbury
Old Sarum is an Iron Age hill fort which was modified in later times. The Roman
Sorviodunum, situated at the crossing
of two Roman roads, it was considered to have been a military
'station', but only traces of Roman occupation have been
discovered at the site.
SWINDON
A large quantity of Roman coins have been recovered from Swindon ranging in date up to fourth century AD.
