THE ANGLO-SAXONS
As King Egbert of Wessex led his army westwards to repel a Viking raid on North Cornwall, the King of Mercia saw an opportunity to extend his territory to the south and assembled his army near Swindon on the edge of Wessex. Egbert repelled the Vikings and returned to route the Mercians at the battle of Ellendune (825) in Wroughton (commemorated in the name of the village shopping centre) to assure the supremacy of Wessex between the south coast, the river Thames and the Cotswolds.
THE SPORT OF KINGS
| Two of Wroughton's public houses, the Ely and the Brown Jack, were named after famous horses which trained in the village. |
The training stables at Wroughton which housed 80-90 horses were world-reknowned and produced several Grand National winners. Amongst the stables' charges were horses belonging to Kings George V, George VI and Edward VIII (as the Prince of Wales, Edward VIII was often to be seen riding on the gallops). When Wroughton aerodrome was established, it took much land from the gallops and Wrughton's trainers moved elsewhere.

Berkeley Road (and Artis Avenue), linking Swindon Road and Perry's Lane on the eastern edge of the town, are a mixture of bungalows and two-storey houses built in the 1950's.
Rising up a hill to the south, the road overlooks the valley bisected by the M4 motorway to Old Town Swindon to the north. The sky-line is dominated by the Princess Margaret Hospital (now replaced by the Great Western Hospital). |
Egbert, King of Wessex
The memorial to Jane Scholes (d.1733) of Wroughton by Richard Farmer of Swindon in the parish church of St. Mary the Virgin in Marlborough is a particularly good example of its kind.
Mr Gosling of the Wiltshire Regiment was awarded the Victoria Cross during World War II.
In 1969, Princess Margaret opened Legge House, a Youth Adventure Centre, in Wroughton and the Girls Friendly Society Hostel in Bath Road, Swindon.
