A-Z Index of Marlborough

Marlborough is a pretty rural municipal borough and market town in the county of Wiltshire. It lies at an elevation of approximately 150 metres above sea level in the upland valley of the Marlborough Downs cut by the river Kennet. Its population in 1961 was 4,852, now it numbers some 7,500.

The town is 28 miles north of Salisbury, 18 miles west of Newbury on the A4 London to Bath road which has now been superceeded as a transport route by the M4 motorway which passes ten miles northwards of Marlborough but was and important road in coaching days when the London/Bristol coaches would stop here.

Although the town has ancient origins, the broad High Street was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1653 and is now flanked by buildings of the 17th century onwards, though older remnants of the town may be seen in the side streets and narrow alleys running off the main thoroughfare.

A church stands at either end of the High Street; St Peter and St Paul's (redundant since [?]) dating from the 15th century at the western end and the parish church of St Mary the Virgin at the eastern end behind the Town Hall Click to show photograph which has dominated this end of the street since 1903. St Mary's has Norman origins (of which only the west doorway remains) but was rebuilt in the 15th century. Subsequently gutted by the Great Fire of 1653, the interior was rebuilt in the Puritan tradition of the Commonwealth.

Marlborough College was founded in 1843, primarily for the sons of clergy (four foundation scholarships and certain other privileges are still reserved for the families of clergy). Within the grounds of the college is Castle Mound where traces of Neolithic and Roman remains have been found. It was on the mound that William I built Marlborough Castle which was visited by many monarchs until it fell into disrepair during the Wars of the Roses. Savernake, about a mile to the south-east was established as a Royal Forest and hunting ground.

HISTORY

The story of Marlborough stretches far back into pre-history when people settled on the site of the Castle Mound which is now in the grounds of Marlborough College and where none other than Kings Arthur's friend and aid Merlin is reputed to be buried.

  • Sir Peter Medawar, the Nobel prize-winning biologist, who was educated at Marlborough College where the Peter Medawar Centre was created in 1995 to draw together the College's extra-curricular intellectual activity.

    ECONOMY

    In the mid-20th century the chief trade of the town was agriculture with some light industry.

    A sheep fair is held on the common in August and two fairs, 'little mop' and 'big mop' in October.

    LOCALLY

    PRESHUTE
    Preshute, by the Kennet to the west of Marlborough has a norman church dedicated to St George. Within the church is a font of black basalt which is said to have arrived there from the chapel of Marlborough Castle.

    MILDENHALL
    Mildenhall is about two miles to the east of marlborough and was a Roman station at an important road junction. Its treasure is the parish church of St John the baptist which dates from Norman times with additions of the 13th and 15th centuries. It has a rare Georgian interior, crammed with oaken box pews, pulpit, reading desk and gallery, which has remained unspoilt since the refurbishment of 1816 - "You walk in to the church of a Jane Austen novel, into a forest of magnificent oak joinery . . .", Sir John Betjeman (an old Marlburnian) in a 1948 broadcast.

    AVEBURY
    The prehistoric monument at Avebury is seven miles to the west of the town and the huge artificial mound of Silbury is just to the south of Avebury.
