Lydiard House is a mixture of architectural styles from various periods but the front presents an elegant facade of Bath stone with a small central pediment and square corner towers protected by pyramid roofs. The front and the south-east elevation date from 1743 when Viscount St John enlarged the house.
The architect responsible for the Georgian alterations and additions to a much earlier structure is not known, but thought to have been Roger Morris.
All the main rooms on the ground floor, formed during the Georgian alteration and including the main hall, library, dining room, drawing room, a bedroom and a small ante-room, are open to the public. The rooms are decorated with excellent carving and plasterwork, from the rather stiff entrance hall to the pre-recoco bedroom. The decorations have been extensively restored since the Second World War and most are new.
The house was sold by the St John family to Swindon Corporation as a bare shell but the main rooms have been furnished with an interesting collection of Georgian furniture the pieces of which have been donated or loaned. A number of St John family portraits whch have been purchased or loaned are also displayed in the house.
The extensive park which surrounds the house is open to the public at no charge (a small charge is made for viewing the house).
The small parish church and churchyard stand just behind the house. Part of the church, restored in the early 1980's, is medieval. It contains one of the finest collections of 17th century monuments in Wiltshire, some good fittings which include 17th century iron communion rails and some early stained glass.
The Goddard family held the sway of power in Old Swindon although the St Johns of nearby Lydiard Park were more widely known throughout the country.
Lord Bolingbroke became a famous racehorse owner and between 1760 and 1790 had stables for some 20 horses at Lydiard Park. Not only did the stables contribute considerably to the local economy, but Bolingbroke became an early patron of George Stubbs who painted many of his horses.
