King Ine
In
705 King Ine of Wessex made Sherborne a bishopric when he appointed his kinsman Aldhelm as the first bishop of the West Saxons.

St Aldhelm first of twenty seven bishops of Sherborne before the see was removed to Old Sarum near modern Salisbury.

Ine's sisters, St Cuthbergha and Cwenburh, established a nunnery at Wimborne Minster in Dorset on the site of which the present Minster is reputed to have been built.

At the turn of the ninth century, Mercia in the Midlands was the most powerful of the Saxon kingdoms of England having come to prominence under under King Offa after 796. Wessex gradually came to dominate the rest of England, particularly south of the river Thames during the reign of King Egbert (802-839) and in 825 Sussex, Surrey and Kent, later Essex and East Anglia came under its control. By 829, Mercia itself had come under the sway of Wessex and, despite first raids of the Vikings from Denmark which had to be fended off, Wessex also recieved the submission of Northumbria, Wales and, in 838, Cornwall.

Ethelred
Sweyn 'Forkbeard ', King of Denmark, invaded England accompanied by his son,
Canute or 'Cnut '. He conquered Wessex in 1013 and drove King Ethelred to Normandy.

Sweyn died the following year and Ethelred returned to re-establish himself and drive Canute back to Denmark. Canute returned in 1015 with a strong fleet and army. He subdued the country and was declared King on the death of Ethelred in 1615, excepting by London which recognised Edmund Ironside.

A peace conference was arranged after Canute's victory at Assandune in Essex at which a compromise was reached; Canute would reign over Northumbria and the North; Edmund would reign over East Anglia, London and Wessex. The agreement continued until the death of Edmund in 1017 when Canute was recognised as King of the English.

How about a page on the modern-day Wessex regionalist movement? Your site, judging by the map on the home page covers the whole of modern Wessex, plus Cornwall.
