Running approximately north-south, the river Tamar borders the English counties of Cornwall and Devon. It is remarkeable for the fact that it rises less than 6 km (4 miles) from the northern coast of Cornwall and Devon but runs southwards, cutting across most of the peninsula.

From near the head of the Tamar, the Cornwall/Devon border runs to the Bristol Cannel along Marsland Water.

At its mouth, it empties into the Hamoaze where it joins with the rivers Lynher and the St Germans River before entering Plymouth Sound.

Although the river has formed the border of Cornwall and Devon since the 8th century when it divided the Celts of Cornwall from the Saxon kingdom of Wessex, the border does deviate from the watercoarse, as with the village of Bridgerule on the Devon bank which is in Cornwall.

Some twenty road crossings ensure the river is not an obstacle to communication between Cornwall and England.

The River Tamar in Tasmania is named after the English river.
