The last Saxon King of England.
Born about 1020, Harold was the son of
Earl Godwin of Wessex by his second wife
Gytha, sister to King Sweyn Forkbeard of
England (1013-1014)
and Denmark (986-1014).
Harold was chosen as the last Saxon King of England by the Witan on the death of Edward the Confessor in 1066.
Harold II had to immedaitely deal with two invasions. He defeated the Norwegian King at the Battle of Stamford Bridge but this allowed William, Duke of Normandy to Land at Pevensey and encamp at Hastings.
Harold marched his army to Battle in East Sussex where he was killed at the Battle of Hastings leaving William to take the English Crown.
