The eldest son of King Egbert of Wessex, Ethelbert or Aethelbert was born around 800 and succeeded his father as King of Wessex in 839. His reign was dominated by the incresing raids of the Danes.
Ethelred won a major victory over the Danes at "Acleah" which is thought to be Ockley in Surrey and defeated the Welsh Cyngen ap Cadell with Mercia.
After the death of his wife Osburh in 855, the Ethelred went in a pilgrimage to Rome with a younger son, Alfred and was deposed on his return in 856 by his eldest son, Ethelbald.
Ethelwulf died on January 13th, 858 and was buried at Winchester.
Ethelwulf's son Athelstan, by his first wife, died comparatively young. He had five children, four sons and a daughter, by his second marriage to Osburh.
