PAGE UNDER RECONSTUCTION
A large but picturesque village in the north-western corner of Dorset some six miles to the south-west of Sherborne. The village possesses many fine buildings.
The fair, held on the second Sunday in July, is not only the largest street fair in Dorset but also, with some justification, claims to be the oldest. Its origins date back to a charter granted to the Bishop of Salisbury in the thirteenth century which authorised a fair to be held '. . . in his manor of Yetminster'. Abandoned in 1948, the fair has become a firmly established annual event since its resumption in 1975.
Boyle's School (1711-1945) in the High Street was endowed by the famous 17th century physicist who laid the foundations for modern chemistry, Robert Boyle F.R.S. (1627-1691), for twenty poor boys of Yetminster, Leigh and Chetnole.
The plaque above the Oak House Stores declares the building to date from 1607.
The Parish Church in Church Street is dedicated to St Andrew. On its exterior is a scratch dial and, still discernible, most of the twelve
crosses which marked its consecration in 1310 - it is one of the finest
sets of such crosses in the county. Most of the church
dates from the 15th century although the chancel is of late 13th century workmanship.
All of its five bells were made over three centuries ago and one is medieval. The clock has no face but, instead, plays the national anthem eight times a day and the bellsounds the curfew at night.

ROBERT BOYLE F.R.S. (1627-91), the famous 17th century physicist who laid the foundations of modern chemistry,
endowed "Boyle's School" in the High Street for the education of 20 poor boys of Yetminster, Leigh
and Chetnole. Boyle conducted many of his experiments at the former Tudor manor house
which was the heart of Stalbridge Park to the east.
BENJAMIN JESTY & THE FIRST RECORDED INNOCULATION
Benjamin Jesty, a local farmer, noticed that dairy maids who had caught cowpox did not catch the killer small-pox and innoculated his family with cowpox as a preventative measure using a needle to scratch the skin. The experiment was performed long before Jenner attempted it but, Jenner being a doctor, the latter is remembered for the first innoclution by posterity. Jesty's experiment might have been lost to us for ever if it were not for the fact that his wife grew very sick as a reslut and almost died.

SHERBORNE,
Dorset
The ancient capital of Wessex, Sherborne was established as
the kingdom's cathedral city. When the see was moved to Old Sarum, the cathedral became an
Sherborne Abbey and, after the
dissolution the abbey church
became the town's famous parish church. Very much a thriving modern town, cars seem oddly out of place
in this ancient setting. Sir Walter Raleigh recieved the
fortified Biship's Palace on the
northern edge of the town from a grateful Queen Elizabeth but found the
'Old' Castle none to his liking -
he built the 'New' Castle in its
grounds instead.
