To the south (Winspit and West Man) and southeast (East Man) of the village, the slopes of the valley carry the remains of prehistoric strip lynchets.
Purbeck stone was quarried from the sea cliffs at Winspit a mile to the south of the village. There are many disused quarries, often referred to as 'caves', and spoil heaps at Winspit. The memory of the quarrying activities which, with farming, were the main occupation of the villagers is perpetuated in the name of the village public house, the 'Square and Compass', although only three working quarries now exist in the vicinity; at Coombe Bottom to the north of the village; at St Aldelm's Head and at Acton.
The parish church is dedicated to St Nichaolas of Myra, the patron saint of sailors.
Inside the porch of the church stands a monumental slab of local Purbeck stone which was unearthed by Ted Miller during ploughing approx. 402 mtres NNE of St Aldhelm's Chapel on nearby St Aldelm's Head. The slab covered the body of a woman aged between 30 and 40 years who lived in the area in the late 13th century. It bears an ornamental 'Celtic cross' design which is similar to to that found on the small coffin lid set into the floor of the church near the altar.

BENJAMIN JESTY
& THE FIRST RECORDED INNOCULATION
Benjamin Jesty, a
Yetminster (in north-west Dorset) farmer,
noticed that dairy maids who had caught cowpox did not catch the killer
small-pox and innoculated his family with cowpox as a preventative measure using a needle to scratch the
skin. The experiment was performed long before Jenner attempted it but, Jenner being a doctor, the latter
is remembered for the first innoclution by posterity. Jesty's experiment might have been lost to us for
ever if it were not for the fact that his wife Elizabeth grew very sick as a result and almost died.
The Jesty's later moved to Worth Matravers on the
Isle of Purbeck
and both Benjamin and his wife lie side-by-side in the churchyard there.

There is parking for only a few cars at the northern end of the village green but there is a large car park on the northern edge of the village (off the Kingston road) with toilet facilities. Charges are very reasonable at £1 for up to 24 hours - payable at the 'honesty box' at the entrance to the car park - proceeds are used towards the upkeep of the car park and the parish. The surface of the car park is composed of rammed stone and can get quite muddy in wet weather.
A map with various information is displayed near the entrance to the car park.
