Looking towards Corfe Castle from Downshey (above Harman's Cross)
This beautful and still much isolated peninsula stretches south-westwards from the sandy shores of
Poole Harbour and Studland Bay
for some 24 kilometres (14 miles) to the 144 metre (400 foot) high limestone cliffs of
St Aldhelm's or St Alban's Head. From the coast, the peninsula is about 13 kilometres (8 miles)
wide. Running west to east of the peninsula is a range of chalk downs which meet the sea as the
near vertical cliffs to the north of Swanage. To the south, the limestone rises sheer from the
waves and is still quarried to produce the famous
Purbeck 'Marble' -
not a true marble, but limestone patterned by many fossil shells.
In saxon and medieval times, when
Wareham was the chief port of
Poole Harbour,
marshes stretched high up the valley of it's river Frome and gave much more justification to the prefix
'Isle' which the peninsula still bears despite being quite firmly
attached to the mainland of
Dorset.
