Between the sharp escarpment which is the northern edge of Wiltshire's Salisbury Plain and the gentler Marlborough Downs, the village of Pewsey lends it name to the beautiful vale of the same name. Despite the arrival of a supermarket and new housing developments at the begining of the 21st century and the pressures of modern traffic through its narrow roads, many of its buidings retain features from the begining of the last century giving the place a sort of old-world charm somewhat removed from the mass-produced homogeny of modern times.
Archeologists have uncovered signs of Saxon settlement at Pewsey Hill, about 1.6km (1 mile) to the south of the village, as early as the 6th century AD. King Alfred of Wessex, the only king in the British Isles to bear the epithet "the Great", defeated the invading Danes in 878 AD and prevented Britain from becomming part of Scandinavia. He owned much land in the area and is commemorated by a monument at the western end of the High Street, overlooking the Wiltshire/Hampshire Avon which runs through the village.

The chalk figure, on one of the steep hills which form the edge of Salisbury Plain,
was first cut in 1785 but seems to have disappeared by
1900. It was re-cut again in 1937 by
Mr Marples to commemorate the coronation of King George VI.
The carnival, the successor of a former church feast, was established in 1808 and has become a
feature of life in the town every September. The carnival events include
illuminations, a carnival procession, dancing, music, and the 'Wheelbeero' race. This
latter involves a wheelbarrow, beer, a spirited crowd and a two-mile route which, by the strangest of co-incidences, encompasses nine of the town's pubs.
The parish church, dedicated to St John the Baptist, was started during the late Norman era, but most of it dates from the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries. It was restored in 1861, and again in 1889-90.
Ball Corner |
| The Tudor cruck house is one of the oldest buildings in the town, standing
at the end of North Street, the B3087 route to Burbage and Savernake Forest.
|
Bridge Cottage |
| On the banks of the river Avon, Bridge Cottage is one of Pewsey's oldest buildings. |
The Court House |
| Standing near the parish church, the Court House dates from the Tudor period and is one of Pewsey's oldest buildings. |
The Old Rectory |
| A typical Georgian house, the Old Rectory was the home fo the Bouverie family who were the dominant influence on all aspects of life in the 19th century town. |
The Conqueror's Domesday Book of 1087 records the manor as being liable for taxes on 46 villagers, 24 tenant farmers , 6 serfs and 7 mills as well as ploughland, meadow and pasture. It refers to the town as "Pevesic". At this time the royal forest of Savernake extended as far as the town.
The manor of Pewsey was in the possession of the Duchess of Somerset in Tudor times and it is from this period that the earliest surviving houses of the town (Ball Corner, Bridge House and the Court House) date.
In 1836, during a period when there was great unemployment and poverty in this rural community, is was decided to site the workhouse of the Union established by the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 in Pewsey.
The isolation of the town was somewhat alleviated by the opening of the Kennet and Avon Canal and Pewsey Wharf in 1810 but it was not until the town was connected to the railway system in 1862 that it was transformed.
The church, schools, administrative and social life of the 19th century town were dominated by the Bouverie family and it was under Canon Bouverie that the parish church was restored. They lived in the Old Rectory.
George Whatley established his business in 1875 in the Foundry building. It was a prosperous engineering business engaged in various activities including iron and brass founding, the manufacture of water wheels, drills and pumps. Part of the building is now occupied by the Heriatge Centre.
It was Whatley's that made the castings for John Kingsone Spratt's clock commemorating the coronation of King George V in 1911 at Wootton Rivers parish church.
Woottons garage was founded in 19212 by Howard Lampard. Here, petrol was available from the town's first hand-crancked petrol pump and Lampard also pioneered the first bus services in the Vale of Pewsey, making his own vehicles.
Joseph Townsend (1738-1816) |
| Rector of Pewsey, who established a free health service in the town and was instrumental in the building fo the first bridge over the river Avon in the town. Townsend was a Fellow of Clare College and studied in Edinburgh. |
Three roads meet in Pewsey at the river Avon; the B3087 to connect with the A346 at Burbage, and the A345 to Marlborough to the north and Upavon and Salisbury to the south.
The statue of King Alfred the Great erected at the junction was unvieled on June 25th, 1913 to commemorate the coronation of King George V.
