Parish Church

A parish church at Bruton is mentioned by King Ine who visited the town and was probably built by St Aldhelm, the famed Bishop of Sherborne. It was extensively rebuilt in the fourteenth century and saw many alterations until 1743 when Sir Charles Berkeley built the chancel to comemmorate his late father. The organ was installed in about 1870.

History

The earliest evidence of human activity in the vicinity of Brunton is a flint axe from the Stone Age which has been found just to the north of the present town at Creech Hill near the site of an Iron-Age hill fort. The name "Creech" is from the Celtic word for "hill".

It is probable that origins of the town hail back to the Iron Age, but no evidence of this has yet come to light.

There was a temple on Creech Hill during the Roman occupation, near the Iron Age hill fort and, at Discove to the south of the town, traces of a Roman pavement indicating the presence of a villa were found in 1711.

Local folklore has it that "Discove" is so named because of the 1711 Roman discovery, but it appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Dinescove" or "Dignescove".

Also in the eighteenth century, a Roman lead "pig" was discovered in the vicinity of Redlynch. Weighing some 50 lbs, it measured approximately 21 inches in length, 3.5 inches in width and was about 2 inches thick. Although now lost, we know that it was inscribed "IMP DVOR AUG ANTONINI ET VERI ARMENIA CORUM", roughly translated as "The lead of the joint rulers Antonius and Verus Armenian" dating it to the joint reigns of Antonius (Marcus Aurelius) and Verus who was called Armenian (A.D. 164-169). It is not known whether the find indicates a Roman settlement or a road or track from the lead mines in the Mendips to the Dorset coast.

Cadbury Castle, one of the sites reputed to be the Camelot of Arthurian legend, is only five miles to the south-west and, to the north-west, is Glastonbury, the fabled "Avalon". It might thus be possible that King Arthur may have visited the town at some point in the fifth or sixth centuries.

Bruton was certainly the site of a Saxon settlement by the seventh century as both King Ine and his famed kinsman St Aldhelm, bishop of Sherborne, visited the town.

A Saxon sword, possibly dating from the ninth century was found in 1985 during the building of the flood relief scheme about a mile to the east of the town. It is a mystery how such a valuable object came to be found there. Perhaps it may have been lost by a warrior travelling to or from the battle of Penselwood where the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that "Cenwalh fought with the Welsh at Penselwood and they put them to flight in the Parret" in 658. Bruton is between Penselwood and the river Parret.

Just as the Bronze-Age people before them, the Celts had been pushed westwards by the advanging Saxons ino Wales, Devon and Cornwall and where known generically as the "Welsh" by the invaders. The sword is kept in Taunton Museum, with a replica in Bruton Museum.

By the reign of the Danish King Canute (1017-1035), the "Borough of Bruton" had become important enough to possess a royal mint.

Many of the strange street names in Bruton have their roots in Anglo-Saxon place names.

The King holds Briwetone. King Edward held it. There are 5 burgesses. 1 swineherd, 6 mills, 5 carucates of arable. 38 acres of meadow, 1 wood 5 miles long and 1 mile wide. In demense are three curacates, 5 servants, 4 coliberts, 26 cottars, 28 villeines and 18 plough teams.

  - the Domesday Book, 1086

. . . the settlement described in the Domesday Book was quite large - a curacate was the area of land which could be ploughed by a plough team in a year, approximately 120 acres, making some 600 acres which were under cultivation. The large area of woodland described in the Domesday Book was probably Cogley wood which would have been much larger than its present 350 acres in the eleventh century.

Beyond Cogley wood is Selwood which is often referred to as "Bruton forest". Now it is fragmented into many separate areas of woodland which, if they were linked up in the past would have formed a huge woodland som fifteen miles long and five miles wide.

Shortly after the compilation of the Domesday Book, William I granted the manor to William De Mohun (who also owned the neighbouring manor of Brewham). Another William de Mohun, possibly a grandson, founded an Augustinian priory at Bruton in 1142 (possibly replacing an earlier Benedictine monastery) and endowed if with the manor of Bruton.

The granting of the manor to the priory shaped the development of the town which became divided along the river Brue with the dwellings of the townsfolk on the north and the various eclesiastical property on the south.

Bruton Market

Bruton certainly had a market by the twelfth century, possibly much earlier. Although it moved site in the town several times, the market continued into the middle of the twentieth century.

In the nineteenth and early twentieth century the market was held near the railway station which allowed cattle to be loaded onto railway wagons. Pigs went on the the nearby bacon factory in Quaperlake St. The cattle were held in various alleyways called "Bartons" before being taken to market.

There was also a market cross in the centre of the town but it has disappeared a long time ago.

John Leland (c.1506-1552) recorded that Bruton had two bridges, each with three arches, when he visited the town in 1540. One was Church Bridge, the other must have been the original West End (Legges) Bridge which was replaced in the twentieth century.

A fight with the inhabitants of Batcombe in 1643 was commemorated by bell ringin each year on the eve of St Matthias Day until 1733.

The Hoare family of Stourhead purchased the abbey in 1786 from the Berkeley family after the Bruton branch died out. It was pulled down although various of its windows and arches were "rescued" by local builders to appear in various buildings around the time.
