There was an important Roman fort at Ilchester which stood on the Fosse Way constructed as early as AD49.
At the time of the Domesday survey of 1086, Ilchester was held by Bishop Maurice of London.
THOMAS BUDD (1617-1617)
The Somersetshire parish rector who became a Quaker in 1657 and, refusing to take the oath of obedience to the Church of England in 1661, was arrested and died at Ilchester jail in 1670 after nine years of imprisonment.
