The parish is divided east-west by the busy A303 road serving the South-West.
The Camelot Group of Parishes
Having evolved for a number of years, the Camelot Group of Parishes was legally established in 1976 and was the first team of this sort in the county of Somerset.
The parishes of Blackford, Compton Pauncefoot, Holton, Maperton, North Cadbury (including the villages of Galhampton and Woolston), North Cheriton, South Cadbury and Yarlington, in the Diocese of Bath and Wells, are served by a ministry team consisting of the Vicar, lay Readers, retired and non-stipediary clergy.
The eight parishes work closely together in several ways. There are Group Services, a Group Choir and a combined monthly magazine named the "Excalibur" (after the Arthurian legends associated with Cadbury Castle) and a Group Council concerned with joint activities and long-term planning.

The Old School |
| was built at Dancing Cross to the north of the village on the old A303 in 1871. It served as a school for the village until 1920 when it was closed and sold for use as a private residence. |

The Copse on the road from Maperton towards Holton and North Cheriton is an area rich in bird and animal life. It also has some interesting legends associated with it.
William the Conqueror's Domesday Book records that the manor of Maperton was originally part of the extensive demesnes of Turstin Fitz Rolph and held by one of his tenants. After the Norman Conquest of 1066, Maperton became the chief manor of the large family estate of the Newmarch family and passed to the de Moeles family in the thirteenth century (a William de Moeles being the first recorded rector of the parish).
Traces of a castle and medieval village from this period can be seen in outlying fields.
in 1800, after many changes, the manor and estate were sold to Thomas Southwood and the advowson to Wadham College, Oxford.
Maperton once possessed two inns, The Three Swans at Dancing Cross and The Cock nearby at what is now Brickyard Farm.
