A Somerset village of large country houses, cottages, bungalows and small residential estates on the B3145 road from Lattiford near Wincanton (to the north-east) to Sherborne in Dorset (to the south-west) about five miles to the south-west of Wincanton.

Originally known Charlton, 'the farmer's settlement',
the name acquired the suffix of Horethorne on account of its being the former meeting place of the hundred court of Horethorne.

Adjacent to the B3145 and near the village green stands the impressive manor house dating from the 17th century. It is surrounded by low walls and possesses a central gate with ornamental piers .
within the farm-yard of the adjacent Manor Farm survives a traditional grannary , timber-built with stone infill and standing on its staddle stones.
The Parish Church, dedicated to St Peter and St Paul has a fine Perpendicular west tower, Monks Place dates from the 17th century and Vine Cottage from 1634.
CHARLTON HORETHORNE V.A. (CoE) PRIMARY SCHOOL
The voluntary aided CoE school, now a co-educational day school taking pupils aged between 4 and 11, was founded by trustees of the late J K W Digby in 1851.
As well as two playground areas, the school posssesses a large playing field, an adventure play area, and an outdoor swimming pool for learners. There are three
classes - Reception and Years 1 and 2 (Key Stage 1), Years 3 and 4 (KS 2) and Years 5 and 6 (KS2).
