The Fosse Way was built across Devon and Somerset by the Romans as early as AD49 to move soldiers, arms and supplies. In Somerset it linked the Roman forts at Charterhouse, Ham Hill, Ilchester, South Cadbury and Wiveliscombe. It also passed through and may have connected possible forts at Bath, Camerton and Shepton Mallet.
The Dobunni who occupied North Somerset, and even more so, the Dumnonii to the west of the River Parrett fiercely opposed the Romans and Somerset was thus heavily militarised at the beggining of the Roman occupation requiring good communication for the army. Somerset also quickly became important for a number of industries including lead and silver mining (centered on Charterhouse in the Mendips).
