The village of Collingbourne Kingston in Wiltshire stands on either side of the busy A338 road which runs through the valley of the river Bourne between Hungerford, Burbage and Salisbury.
The parish church was built c.1200 during the reign of the Norman kings. In 1344 it was dedicated to St John the Baptist but, by 1763, it had its present dedication to St. Mary. The earliest known alteration to the fabric of the Norman church dates from the 15th century.
At the western end of the church, the pillar on the north side bears the embelished head of a Norman lady who is depicted looking down in to the aisle.
The church is built of rubble with freestone dressings.
Major restoration work was carried out in the church by John Colson in 1862.
The church clock on the outside of the tower was a gift of the Gauntlett family in 1919.
THE BELLS Four bells were recorded at St Mary's in 1553 but they were replaced by four cast by John Wallis in 1614. The ring was increased to five in 1695 with a tenor bell cast by Samuel Knight. This bell was recast in 1896 by John Taylor of Loughborough when a treble bell cast at the same foundry brought the peal up to six.
MONUMENTS
A brass plate below the carpet of the chancel commemorates Constantine Darel (whose will was proved in 1508) and his wife Joan who died in 1495.
The imposing Pile monument dominates the south-east corner of the church in the chancel. The recumbent figures of Thomas Pile (d.1560) and his wife (d.1561) lie under the canopy. Kneeling at his parents feet, but with his back to them, facing the congregation is the effigy of Sir Gabriel Pile (d.1626) with his wife beside him. The two small figures which kneel down one side of their recubent grandparents are the sons of Sir Gabriel who was the lay rector of the parish.
THE CHURCH PLATE The King's commissioners are recorded as having taken 24 oz. of plate from the church, leaving a 9-oz. chalice. In 1891 and 1994, a chalice and patten (both hallmarked for 1687) were held for the church.
CHURCH REGISTERS Records of the registrations of baptisms and burials at St Mary's date back to 1653 and those of marriages to 1654. These are incomplete, records of baptisms and burials being missing for 1744-5 and 1747-54. The records of marriages are missing for 1744-5 and 1747-53.
NONCONFORMISTS Daniel Burgess, who had been the rector of Collingbourne Ducis was ejected for Presbyterianism in 1669 and preached in a house Collingbourne Kingston.
