Milborne Port is excellently situated as a base to explore not only Somerset, which loops
southwards here to capture the village, but also Dorset - with much of interest within
miles of the village.
MILBORNE WICK, Somerset
A tiny hamlet within the boundaries of the parish to the north, is the picture of a rural England now two centuries passed.
GOATHILL, Dorset
The rural hamlet, a mile south of
the A30 possesses little church on a mound overlooking the valley and once possessed a
mill which has since been converted into a residence.
OBORNE,
Dorset
The village was given to nearby
Sherborne Abbey when it
was a cathedral by Edgar, king of Wessex. After the
dissolution it became the
property of of the Caius College, Cambridge. The 16th century
parish church must
have been amongst the last to be built before the
dissolution but fell into
such disrepair by the 19th century that it had to be pulled down save for the lonely
chancel next to the
A30.
PURSE CAUNDLE,
Dorset
The small village possesses
a fine 15th century manor house (though much altered in Tudor times) and contemporary
parish church
with an embattled and pinnacled tower. Peter Mews, the last
of the great soldier-bishops, was born here and the famous physician
Nathaniel Highmore, friend of William Harvey,
is buried in the church.
SHERBORNE,
Dorset
The ancient capital of Wessex, Sherborne was established as
the kingdom's cathedral city. When the see was moved to Old Sarum, the cathedral became an
Sherborne Abbey and, after the
dissolution the abbey church
became the town's famous parish church. Very much a thriving modern town, cars seem oddly out of place
in this ancient setting. Sir Walter Raleigh recieved the
fortified Biship's Palace on the
northern edge of the town from a grateful Queen Elizabeth but found the
'Old' Castle none to his liking -
he built the 'New' Castle in its
grounds instead.
