 Purse Caudle, Dorset, looking south

This small agricultural village in north-west Dorset lies by a stream which flows into Sherborne Lake near which Sir Walter Raleigh built his 'New' Castle, having abandoned Sherborne 'Old' Castle which he had recieved from Elizabeth I.

THE PARISH CHURCH

 St Peter's, Purse Caundle, Dorset
The parish church, like the manor house, dates from the 15th century. It has an embattled tower with pinnacles and an unusual brass depicting a 'chaliced priest'. The chancel arch is panelled to give an unusual effect and the font is decorated with shields and roses.

The great physician, Nathaniel Highmore, who was brought up at the rectory here is buried in the church which also possesses the fine canopied tomb of William Long, lord of the manor who died in 1524, and who may have built the chantry chapel.

THE MANOR HOUSE

 Purse caundle Manor, Dorset
THE MANOR HOUSE in the village street dates from the 15th century with many changes made during the Tudor period. The drawing room of the house has an
oriel window while its medieval hall possesses a strange feature in a well which reaches half-way to the upper storey - an excellent medieval device for ensuring a supply of fresh water during any seige. The medieval manor was held by the Crown and saw frequent use a royal hunting lodge.

Peter Mews, the last of the great soldier-bishops, was born within its walls.

GHOSTS AT THE MANOR
The most frequent haunting in the manor house is the sound of plainsong. This form of church music, sung unaccompanied by instruments, is associated with services in monasteries. There is no obvious religious connection between the Manor or its lands and any monastic house, which makes the haunting all the more mysterious.

It is reputed that the royal hounds are seen running on the bowling green, and can be heard howling (on New Year's eve and on midsummer's eve) until brought to heel by a from the horn of a spectral huntsman (the huntsman could be John Aleyn who lived here before the present house was built and kept the King's hounds).

Hauntings at the house must have been taken quite seriously because, in 1874, the manor's fine newel staircase was removed after the repeated appearance of an apparition which scared the ladies of the household.

The Queen's Head public house in nearby Milborne Port (part of which also dates from the Tudor period) is reputed to be frequented by a 'friendly' ghost.

A little beyond the Queen's Head, another Tudor house, Sandford Orcas Manor also has an impressive collection of ghosts.

BISHOP'S CAUNDLE,   Dorset

The Town Hall, High Street, Milborne Port, Dorset

MILBORNE PORT,   Somerset
No less than six watermills recorded in Domesday powered the woollen and flax industry here. The prosperity earned medieval Milborne its covetted charter of incorporation as a borough. Two centuries ago, cloth-making gave way to leather. Rightly a 'town', this large but compact village often possesses an almost film set like atmosphere and rewards the visitor exploring on foot most abundantly. Its tiny outlying hamlet of Milborne Wick is the picture of a rural England now two centuries passed.
