The West Saxons named their capital Sherborne, 'scir burne' - the place of the clear stream.

Sherborne was the ancient capital of the West Saxon kingdom of Wessex. It is thought that the Celtic Christian Church called 'Lanprobi' was sited within the precincts of the modern town but we can be certain that King Ine of Wessex established the bishopric here in AD705 when he appointed his kinsman Aldhelm as the first bishop of the West Saxons. Aldhelm's cathedral here was probably a simple building sited just to the west of the present Abbey for which the town is famous.

Sir Walter Raleigh's family seat was at Sherborne Old Castle at the northern extremity of the town. He recieved it from a grateful Queen Elizabeth I but found the Old Castle not to his liking and built the 'New' Castle on the estate.
