Roman
Silver and lead were mined at Charterhouse very early into the Roman occupation of the British Isles (AD43-410). Dateable ingots of lead found in the neighbourhood of the Mendips show that the mines were operated from at least AD49.
Originally the lead and silver mining industries were tightly controlled by the Roman military but the extraction of these metals was soon contracted out to civilian enterprises.
The Roman settlement here was served by a small amphitheatre for the entertainment of the inhabitants and a fort maintained the military resence. The fort and the settlement were on the Fosse Way which may have been built as early as AD49.
