Ringwood is a market town at the western edge of the New Forest in Hampshire at the point where the A31 crosses the Hampshire Avon. For centuries the traditional market town of the New Forest, Ringwood obtained a royal charter allowing it to hold a market in 1226 and still possesses a market held on Wednesday mornings.

Little is known of the early history of Ringwood but a document of 955 records its name as "Rimucwude", at the "Rim of the Forest". The town relied on the waters of the river Avon to power its mills and the New Forest for the fuel to power its industry. William the Conqueror's Domesday Book of 1086 records a church and a mill in the town.
