RA Lister and Company was established at Dursley in Gloucestershire on August 23rd, 1867 in a mill rented for 6 per annum a man and a boy as employees. The business prospered and, in 1870, Lister purchased the mill he had rented with a mill house and other buildings for 750.
In 1872, Lister took up a small stall at the Gloucestershire Agricultural with his engineer and machinist neighbour, William Priestley, where they exhibited a 3 h.p. portable steam engine, chaff cutters, a portable grinding mill, lifting jacks and cheese presses. In 1874 Lister purchased Priestley's premises adjoining his own and continued to buy up property adjacent to his works for expansion.
The hours worked by Lister's expanding workforce at his "Victoria Works" (1869-) were long - from 6am to 6 pm, with half an hour for breakfast and an hour for lunch. At the beggining and end of the working day, those working in neighbouring villages and hamlets might have many miles to walk to and from the works in all weathers.
