Every October the children of the village parade candlelit mangel-wurzels through the village to celebrate 'Punky Night' which recalls by-gone days when the village house-wives would use the candlelit mangel-wurzels to try frighten their drunken menfolk who had outstayed their leave at Chiselborough Fair.
The name 'Hinton' is probably derived from the Old English 'hean' and 'tun' meaning 'poor enclosure'.
The village was dominated for many centuries by the Poulett family who lived in Hinton House near the parish church. The wealth of the Pouletts provided schools, halls and artisans' houses to serve their estate.
At least two cottages in the village date from the 14th Century.

2003 - The 'Yellow Brick Road' Seeking to resurface the tarmac footpaths of the Ham stone-built village with something more suitable, the Parish Council opted for a gravel surface at a cost of £25,000. This has caused a great deal of controversey in the village with many residents nick-naming the pavements 'Yellow Brick Road' although Adrian cavendish, chairman of the Parish Council, said that the gravel will "tone down" over time.
