The mother of King Henry VII of England
She was born on May 31st, 1443,
the daughter and heiress of John Beaufort, 1st Duke of Somerset, and the grand-daughter
of John of Gaunt (1340
-1399).
In 1455, Margaret married Edmund Tudor,
earl of Richmond, who died in the following year.
She then married Henry (d. 1482), the son of
Humphrey Stafford, duke of Buckingham, and later Thomas Stanley,
afterwards earl of Derby.
Throughout the exile of her son Henry in Brittany, Margaret
remained in constant cornmunication with him and,
with her husband Lord Stanley, aided him to win the
crown of England in
1485.
Very pious and charitable, and under the influence of John Fisher, her confessor
(afterwards bishop of Rochester), she founded the Lady Margaret professorships of
divinity at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
She completed the foundation of Christs College, Cambridge, during her life-time, and
after her death, much of her wealth was devoted to building and endowing St Johns College,
Cambridge, in accordance with her wishes.
Margaret died on June 29th, 1509,
surviving her son Henry VII and the accession of her
grandson Henry VII as the second
English monarch of the Tudor dynasty.
