The Tamar Bridge carries the A38, one of the two main arterial routes connecting Cornwall to the remainder of England via Devon.
Opened to traffic in 1961, it spans the river Tamar above the Hamoaze, connecting Plymouth on the Devon to Saltash in Cornwall.
The bridge is owned jointly by Plymouth City Council and Cornwall County Council and managed by the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee.
Just downstream from the Tamar bridge is Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge carrying the major rail link to Cornwall.
