The car and pedestrian ferry plies across the Hamoaze, a stretch of water at the mouth of the River Tamar, between Keyham in Plymouth and Torpoint in Cornwall.
The crossing is served by three somewhat antiquated pontoon ferries which are named after the three tributaries of Plymouth Sound;
the Lynher; the Plym; and the Tamar. All three vessels are scheduled for replacement in 2004-5.
The ferry is owned jointly by Plymouth City Council and Cornwall County Council and, together with the Tamar Bridge, managed by the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee.
Opened to traffic in 1961, it spans the river Tamar above the Hamoaze, connecting Plymouth on the Devon to Saltash in Cornwall.
