The Roman site at Groundwell Ridge was extensively excavated by English Heritage during the summer of 2004.
Bust of Isis
A small lead bust was found in July 2004 by Peter Crisp of the Wyvern Historical and Detector Group during the excavations by English Heritage. In August 2004 it was identified as a bust of the Amcient Egyptiian goddess Isis by Dr Martin Henig, an expert on Roman religion at Oxford University. It may have been cast in a clay mould and made with a bronze fitting for a jug or perhaps a steelyard weight.
Dr Martin Henig thinks that the small figure was probably venerated on a domestic altar rather than indicating a temple or shrine at Groundwell Ridge. Others, such as Bryn Walters of the Association for Roman Archaeology consider that the discovery of the figure of Isis, worshiped by both the Ancient Egyptians and the Romans at the site which contains an abundance of water strengthens the theory that the site was a shrine to Isis.

The figure found here is one of the few images of Isis to be found in Britain.
