The parish church, dedicated to St Peter, is an imposing structure, mostly dating from a major rebuilding between 1412 and 1429 and owes its grandeur to the prosperity of Tiverton brought about by the wool trade which peaked in the 16th century. The richly carved porch and chapel built John Greenway date from 1517.
Inside, the church possesses finely carved capitals, a large Mayor's pew supported by lions and unicorns and the remains of a medieval rood screen which was removed to the church at Holcombe Rogus.
Among the treasures of the church is a library (closed to the public) containing many works dating back to the sixteenth century.
It was bequethed to the church in 1715 by the Rev. John Newte.
A chantry chapel stood in the churchyard in memory of the Courtenay family, the Earls of Devon whose seat was at nearby Tiverton Castle. Among other monuments within it, stood a gilded effigy of Princess Katherine, the daughter of King Edward IV (1461-1483) and wife of Sir William Courtenay, who died in 1527. The chapel had already become dilapidated by the time of the Civil War when it was demolished.
