A family of carnivorous mammals belonging to the order Carnivora. Commonly known as "Canines" after their prominent canine teeth, the family includes the dogs, wolves, foxes, coyotes and jackals.
The family is divided into the subfamily Canini which contains the "true dogs" and the subfamily Vulpini which contains the "foxes". This division may not be in accordance with the actual evolutionary relations. The classification of several species are also disputed.
The Domesticated Dog is listed by some authorities as Canis familiaris while other treat it as Canis lupus familiaris, a subspecies of the Wolf.
The Red Wolf may or may not deserve recognition as a distinct species and the Dingo, a native of Australia, is variously classified as Canis lupus dingo, Canis dingo and Canis familiaris dingo.
