History

The grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) breeds in secluded bays of the British Isles. Its white-furred pups, an adaptation to camouflage the vulnerable young animals against Arctic predators, which has been retained in the British breeding populations is thought to indicate the colder climate of the British Isles in the past, and particularly during the last ice age.
