An Anglican deanery, a hundred, peninsula and administrative district at the western extremity of mainland Cornwall.
Like Bodmin Moor in the north-east of Cornwall, the Penwith or Lands End peninsula
is a granite highland moor with rolling moorland created by man's farming and grazing activities in prehistoric times and dramatic granite tors, it was created during the Carboniferous period (299-359 million years ago) when the rocks which now form the British Isles were crumpled and folded as Europe collided with Scotland and the molten magma which welled up from below the crust cooled, solidified and crystalised slowly.
Gradual erosion by the elements exposes the granite bones of the peninsula but the hard wearing igneous rock which forms a shield against the wrath of Atlantic storms weathers very slowly to top the tors of the moorland with typical if strange formations. |

Farming and grazing during the Neolithic and the Bronze Age cleared the native woodlands of the peninsula and a cooler and wetter climate washed the fragile soil away. Grazing has ensured that the native woodlands have not returned and ensured the rugged landscape is maintained |
The Penwith peninsula is particularly rich in prehistoric monuments including almost ninety menhirs or standing stones which date from the Neolithic or New Stone Age onwards such as Lanyon Quoit. Stone cirlces on the peninsula date from the Bronze Age. It also possesses a number of Iron Age settlements consisting of the courtyard houses which are peculair to the peninsula, the Isles of Scilly, Wales and other highland locations in the British Isles.

After the their conquest of England in 43AD, the Romans ruled Cornwall with a light hand, perhaps they had met little resistance here. They built only one fort in Cornwall and only one villa has been discovered; they traded with the Britons for locally produced tin and Marazion which the Romans knew as "Ictis" was a centre of the trade - it claims to be the oldest town in Britain.
