St Swithun or Swithin, Bishop of Winchester (852-862).
St Swithun had been the prior of the monastery attached to the 'Old Minster' at Winchester before becomming bishop. According to the chroniclers, he built churches where there were none and and repaired those which had been ruined or destroyed.
The prior and bishop was one of the most learned men of his time and tutored both King Aethelwulf and his son, Alfred the Great (c.871-c.901).
