John Dudley (1501-1553), Earl of Warwick and 1st Duke of Northumberland, became obtained supreme power during the regency of Edward VI on the fall of Somerset and attempted to retain his power after the king's death by installing Lady Jane Grey on the throne as his puppet.
He was the first son of Henry VIII's minister Edmund Dudley by Elizabeth, daughter of Edward Grey, 1st Viscount Lisle. His father was executed and the family estates forfeited in 1509 and the young Dudley became the ward of Sir Edward Guildford. The estates of his father were restored to him in 1512 (3 Hen. VIII, c.19), married Guildford's daughter Jane (c.1520) and succeeded him as master of the royal armour to Henry VIII.
In 1523, he accompanied Richard Guildford and Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, in a military campaign in France and was knighted by Suffolk for his valour at the crossing of the Somme. Sponsored by Cardinal Wolsey and Thomas Cromwell, Dudley rose steadily in Henry VIII's court.
He defeated Ket's rebels at Mousehold Hill.
Dudley was buried in the Tower of London.
His fourth son, Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, born 1532, became a favourite of Elizabeth I.

Edward VI had been a sickly child since birth and is thought to have contracted congenital syphylis while still in the womb from his father. He died on July 6th, 1553, aged only fifteen of either tuberculosis or poisoning by arsenic and was interred in Westinster Abbey.
By the time of his death, the Protestant Edward was sufficiently master of his own destiny to have concerns about the succession. Having no wish for England to revert to Catholicism under his staunchly Catholic half-sister Mary Tudor, he was persuaded to support the claim to the throne of Northumberland's daughter-in-law and puppet, Lady Jane Grey (1537-1554).
After the deposition of Lady Jane Grey, Dudley tried to save himself by recanting his Protestant faith, claiming "A living dog is better than a dead lion." Lady Jane is claimed to have said of him, "I pray God I, nor no friend of mine die so."
