Prior to 1801, 'listings' of the inhabitants of parishes are sometimes found. These may give the names of all persons living in the parish, or only that of the householder.

The returns of the census enumerators have only survived from 1841. They are kept at the Public record office, Chancery Lane, London and are only available to the public after they are a hundred years old.

The 1841 returns only give ages within a series of five-year groups and only record whether or not the person was born in the county in which they were then residing.

To make use of the census records for genealogical studies, it is necessary to know the parish in which the person in question resided at the time of the census.

From 1851 onwards, the exact age and place of birth of each person recorded are noted.

There was no census conducted in 1941 during the Second World War.
