The registers of over 270 Wiltshire parishes are deposited at the Wiltshire Record Office in Trowbridge. Those of the city parishes of Salisbury are kept at the District Council Muniment Room in Salisbury under the control of the Wiltshire Record Office.
A brief list of registers is held at both Trowbridge and Salisbury. Copies can be supplied at cost of production or details of holdings for individual parishes notified on request.
All the deposits begin with the earliest extant register (which may vary from 1538 to the late 17th century or even early 18th century. The closing date of the deposit series varies; it is often 1813 or 1837, but can sometimes be much later.
The incumbent of the parish concerned must be approached for registers not in the Record Office.
Some of the registers have been transcribed, indexed or both.
Researchers should note the 14 volumes of Wiltshire Parish Registers: Marriages edited by WPW Phillimore and J Sadler (1905-15) - copies of this publication are available at theWiltshire Record Office and Local Studies Libraries in the county.
