Before the Norman conquest, the manor of Chideock belonged to King Arthur, shortly after the conquest it became the property of William the Conqueror.
It was granted to Norman barons until 1312 when Edward II gave the lands to the first John De Chidiock (whose family came from Bridport) and in 1449 the manor passed through marriage to the Arundell. The Arundells held the manor until it was purchased by Thomas Weld in 1802. His grandson later married a descendant of the last Sir John De Chidiock. The Welds lived in the present Manor House until quite recently.
The three families held the Manor of Chideock for over 650 years through troubled and more peaceful times. During the Civil War, the castle was slighted on the orders of parliament.
In the 16th century, Thomas Leland dismissed Chideock as "fisher town distant a mile from the shore. in his Itinerary.
The population of the village in 1801 totalled 578. Of these, 302 were engaged in agriculture and 49 in trade or manufacture. The toil of many of these worers must have been connected with the famed cordage and net industry of nearby Bridport. Many of those working in agriculture must have been engaged in growing flax while many out-workers in the village made nets.
