Knowlton Circle in Dorset is one of the very few surviving examples of an ancient stone circle within which a
Christain Church was later built. This was a deliberate attempt to demonstrate graphically how the new religion had replaced its
predecessor while also showng an enlightened approach in preserving the original stone circle.

A letter still exists which was written to Abbot Mellitus by Pope Gregory VII (c.1023-85). In it, the Pope says that pagan temples should
not be destroyed but, whenever possible, sanctified and coverted for Christian use. Knowlton is one of the few sites where this policy
prevailed.
The remains of the Church date from the 12th Century, or possibly earlier. The stone circle itself,
from early Bronze Age.
Why the village of Knowlton disappeared is not known. It is known that the three open fields of Knowlton were still being cultivated early in the 16th century. A century later, its parish church (still standing as a ruin in the centre of an earlier pagan earthwork), was in decay.
White Mill Bridge features in a Dorset legend which claims that the people of Sturminster Marshall were in need of new bells for the parish church. They took the bells from Knowlton church but, finding themselves chased by the villagers of Knowlton, they cast the bells into the Stour from the bridge. When the thieves returned to recover the bells, they could not prevent them from slipping back into the waters however hard they tried and, the legend tells, there they lie to this day.
