The consecration cross Click to show photograph of the 15th century church, dedicated to St Nicholas, is still visible by the door of the church and there is also a pair of mass dials Click to show photograph Click to show photograph on the porch Click to show photograph . A treasure of the church is the medieval stone screen Click to show photograph with its fine tracery beneath the panelled arch. The pulpit is jacobean with round arches and foliage.

History

The church was commenced with the erection of the nave, chancel and porch Click to show photograph during the great period of church building in the 13th century as landowners began to grow rich on the lucrative woollen trade with Flanders. It is tempting to speculate that the church was built by the Benedictine Monks of Sherborne Abbey only three miles away in response to popular demand for an outlying chapel in the village whose land they owned.

There is no record of the appointment of a Rector to the parish until 1405 so it seems that for more than a century after the simple Church was built, services were taken by priests from the Abbey.

The first Rector at Nether Compton was appointed in 1405, a few decades after the last outbreak of the Black Death which had ravaged the population of England in the 14th century. The village appears to have prospered, however, as it was during the 15th century that that the Church was enlarged with the building of the tower at the west end and a side chapel at the north. The nave was also partially rebuilt and given its barrel roof.

Henry VIII's rift with Rome and lust for riches brought about the dissolution of the monasteries, the lesser houses in 1536 and the greater, Sherborne Abbey (who owned the village) among them, in 1540. It was during this time, in 1538, that the King's Vicar General, Thomas Cromwell, introduced parish registers.

The 17th century was a time of religious dissent, political revolution and civil war. Nether Compton, like much of the West Country, was not untouched by these events. Tradition has it that during the summer of 1645 when the victorious Parliamentary campaign in the west included the defeat of the Royalists at Langport on July 10th, the Parliamentary cavalry stabled their horses in the church and "burnt popish furnishings".

The Nave

The nave measures 43 feet by 17 feet and, despite the Victorian glass and floor tiles, is basically as constructed in the 15th century.

The barel roof also dates from the 15th century reconstruction with its moulded ribs forming eight bays, each of four panels. There are bosses at the intersections carved with the instruments of the Passion, the holy initials, foliage, a lion, a human face, a double-headed eagle and a monkey. The wall plates have carved heads under alternate ribs. Unfortunately the carvings ar at such a height that they cannot be clearly seen.

The pews, some twenty in number, are basically of the 17th century although there are some repairs and modern work.

The pulpit, with moudlings, carved arabesques and arches, is c.1600 (the Elizabethans appreciated the value of a good sermon in encouraging right thinking towards the state as well as God).

The Screen

The 15th century stone screen is one of the treasures of St Nicholas's Church. It has five bays including the doorway into the chancel. On the south side there is a wide bay Click to show photograph which allows the priest and congregation to see each other. To the north, the choir sits behind two bays which have double lights and tracery.

The steps cut into tha masonry to the north of the screen and chancel arch originally led to the rood loft on which, usually, stood carvings of a crucifix accompanied by figures of St Mary and St John. Many roods were destroyed during the Reformation and their final removal, with the loft, was ordered in 1561.

The Chancel

The Chancel measures approximately 19 feet by 15 feet. The eats window dates from the 15th century alhtough it has been partially restored, the glass is modern. The elaborate carvings incorporated into the bench end of the Rector's stall date from the early 16th century.

The North Chapel

The north Chapel is a mixture of 19th and 15th century work, with the west end of the chaple being the older part. The niche at the west end, although restored dates from the 15th century. The same may be true of the statue Click to show photograph of St Nicholas, the patron saint of the Church, but the date of its carving is unknown. The protective cradlng of the ship Click to show photograph shows St Nicholas as the patron saint of seamen and many coastal churches are dedicated to him.

The Tower

The tower at the west end, built during the 15th century, stands eight foot square. The door, which is kept locked for safety, leads to the stairs which allow access to the bell chamber. Note the 19th century rules for bell ringers set on the wall.

Also in the tower is the mechanism of the clock which was installed in 1770. It is wound by the sexton once a week but has a tendency to loose five minutes a week.

The Font

The octagonal font with its moulded under edge was made in the 14th century. The stem is octagonal to square and stands on a chamfered base.

     THE BELLS

There is a peal of five bells. One dates from the 15th century, one from 1585 and two from 1658. The fifth is modern.

The bells are rung sometimes by men whose families have lived in Nether Compton for over four hundred years.
