A Benedictine monastery was founded on Tresco in the 12th century and it is the only island of the Isles of Scilly which is not owned by the Duchy of Cornwall.
Of the five inhabited islands in the archipelago, Tresco best illustrates the contrast between the mild maritime climate and the vicious winter storms which buffet the Isles of Scilly from the Atlantic. On the sheltered southern end of the island are the lush sub-tropical Abbey Gardens while the bare rock at the northern end, sculpted by the winds, supports only low, ground-hugging heather heathland.
The Isles of Scilly are part of a larger land mass known as "Ennor in Tudor times before it was flooded by rising sea-levels. At very low tides it is still possible to
walk to the neighbouring island of Bryher or from Bryher to Samson.
