The tradition of bringing a tree into the home and dressing it for the Christmas festivities was imported in the early 19th century from Germany by Prince Albert who married Queen Victoria. Nowadays the Christmas tree is decorated with ornaments specially purchased or made for the purpose and stored away for future use. In former times, the tree was decorated with sweets, fruit, small presents and other treats. Electric lighting has made Christmas trees much safer than in days when candles were used to decorate them and frequently set the trees which become very flammable as they dry out indoors alight. |
