Catherine Howard (1521-1542), the fifth wife and queen consort of King Henry VIII from July, 1540 to February, 1542.
Catherine was born, probably in London, the daughter of Lord Edmund Howard and granddaughter of the 2nd Duke of Norfolk. She married Henry VIII on July 28th, 1540, at Oatlands Palace in Surrey having caught his eye before the annullment of his marriage to Anne of Cleves.
In her early teens, Catherine had had an affair with Francis Dereham, a young scholar employed by her family, and the pair had been unofficially engaged.
After comming to the royal court, she folishly began a liaison with Thomas Culpeper (a member of the royal household who was a relative of her mother) and even hired her former lover, Dereham, as her private secretary.
Having been discovered, Catherine confessed to adultery, was convicted of high treason,
and executed on February 13th, 1542, at the
Tower of London. She was buried at the Royal Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula.
On the night before her execution, Catherine asked that the execution block be brought into her chamber so that she could rehearse her execution.
