John Dee (July 13th, 1527, - December 1608), noted English mathematician, astronomer, geographer, also interested in alchemy, astrology, divination and Rosicrucianism, scientific consultant to Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603).
Dee was responsible for selecting January 15th, 1559 as the date for the coronation of Elizabeth I as particularly auspicious astrologically to prevent misfortune.
Awarded a pension by his patron, Queen Elizabeth I, Dee
travelled widely abroad and possibly acting as a spy.
His influence died with his patron the Queen
in 1603 and he was forced to retire to his home at
Mortlake, London, where he died in poverty.
