Great Bustard (Otis tarda)

The Great Bustard, weighing up to 50 lbs with a seven foot wingspan and standing as high a a roe deer, is the world's largest flying bird and has been extinct on Salisbury Plain since 1873. The falling world population numbers only 35,000 individuals, mostly in Spain, Portugal, Russia and Hungary where they are threatened by farming intensification. Fourty chicks have been imported from the village of Diakovka in Russia to be reintroduced on Salisbury Plain in 2004.

History

The beds of chalk in Southern England and Western Europe which have become folded and eroded to form chalk downlands were laid down during the Cretaceous period (135 to 65 million years ago). This gives rise to the name of the period which is derived from "creta", the Latin for "chalk".
