The son of a Danish chieftain who took part in the invasion of England in 870, Odo converted to Christianity was persecuted by his father. He was adopted by the Anlgo-Saxon nobleman Athelm as his son, well educated and induced by his adoptive father to enter the Church and, in 887, accompanied Athelm to Rome. Athelm died in 898.
Odo was made Bishop of Ramsbury in 926 and, always inclined to soldiering, fought at the battle of Brunanburgh in 937.
In 942, he was selected by St Dunstan, minister to King Edmund I at the time, as Archbishop of Canterbury.
As Archbishop, Odo set about reforming the church by
separating the clergy from their wives
expelling secular clergy from the cathedrals, and
the introduction of the Benedictine rule into the monasteries (Odo had entered the Benedictine order before becomming Archbishop)
Shortly after the coronation of Edwy in 955, Odo divorced the young king and Elgiva, and had the queen carried off to be branded on the face with hot irons.
Odo made many improvements to Canterbury cathedral and was employed on several diplomatic missions by Kings Athelstan, Edmund I, and Edred.
The Archbishop died in June 958 and was buried at Canterbury.
