Now closed, the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Junction Railway was knick-named the "Desert Line" by virtue of its running from Didcot to Winchester through largely unpopulated agricultural districts apart from the town of Newbury and, more optimistically, the "Gold Coast Line" for the freight it carried to the South Coast ports through the golden fields at harvest time.
The first single-track section opened from Didcot to Newbury in April 1882 and the section to Winchester Chesil station was opened in May 1885. In 1891, a junction was made with the London and South Western Railway at Shawford to the south of Winchester.
The original route from Didcot in Berkshire to Winchester Chesil station in Winchester, Hampshire, ran through Woodhay Station, Highclere Station, Burghclere Station, Litchfield Station, Whitchurch South Station, Sutton Scotney Station, Worthy Down Halt and Kings Worthy Station. The later connection with the London and South Western Railway continued the line to Shawford Junction on the main line to Southampton.
The railway merged with the Great Western Railway in 1923.
